Bulletin: All Dealers and Tag and Title Agencies

Purpose

This bulletin is to notify all dealers and tag and title agencies that the MVA has developed a process in the business portal to request MDID numbers for your customers that do not have an existing MDID account and in the future, track submitted requests. The new process will go into effect on June 3rd, 2026, and the ERT Soundex email process will no longer be used. If you do not have a portal account please visit our webpage at https://mva.maryland.gov/your-mva-guide/businesses to create a portal account. 

Summary

Please see the instructions below that will detail how to submit an MDID request in the portal.

  1. When you log into your portal, from the home screen you should see a button that says “Request ERT MD ID.” You will need business portal access for this. Your business administrator may need to update your access to the business portal if you do not have the options featured below.

  2. Next will see the following screen with two options. For a new request, click “Submit ERT MD ID Request.”

  3. Then follow the steps to submit the request. You will be prompted to enter the required information and upload documentation.

  4. Verify the address then click save

  5. Next, upload the required attachments. Please upload all images as one attachment.

  6. Click Submit to complete your request. You will receive a confirmation code. At this point your request has been submitted and will be reviewed by an MVA agent. The expected turnaround time for these requests is 24-72 hours.

You also have the option to view your previous MD ID requests submitted on the portal.

  1. Click “Review Previous ERT MD ID Request”

  2. Then enter the date range you wish to search.

  3. From this screen you can view the status of your requests. Once they are approved, the MD ID number will be displayed in the corresponding row. *Note, you will not receive a notification when the request is completed, please refer to this page on a regular basis.*

This feature is not yet available on the portal. Please familiarize yourself with this bulletin and the directions provided so that you are prepared for these changes once they are available. This functionality will be available on Wednesday June 3rd, 2026.
