Motorcycle Skills Test
This page tells you how to prepare for and take the Motorcycle Skills Test in Maryland. The test checks your ability to control a motorcycle safely in different riding situations.
Please note: If you have a Maryland Motorcycle Safety Program Completion Certificate, you do not have to take the Motorcycle Skills Test to get your motorcycle license or endorsement.
If you have a motorcycle learner's permit and/or are under 18, you must pass this skills test to get your motorcycle license or endorsement.
How to Prepare for the Motorcycle Skills Test
Step 1: Know the Test Format
The motorcycle skills test has two main parts:
- Basic vehicle control skills (on a closed course)
- On-road riding skills (if required by your test route)
The examiner evaluates your ability to ride safely and use proper techniques during these exercises.
Step 2: Bring a Proper Motorcycle
You must use a motorcycle that:
- Is safe and in good working condition
- Has a valid registration card
- Is appropriate for the class you are testing (A or B)
- Has tires and brakes in good condition
- Is free of mechanical defects
If any safety item is not working, the examiner may refuse to test you until the issue is corrected.
Step 3: Bring Required Documentation
On test day, bring:
- Your motorcycle learner’s permit
- Your valid driver’s license (if required)
- Proof of motorcycle registration
- Proof of insurance
If you are a new rider without a Maryland driver’s license, you must bring documents to verify your identity and residency per MVA requirements.
Step 4: Safety Gear Must Be Worn
During the skills test, you must wear proper safety gear, including:
- Helmet
- Eye protection
- Long pants
- Over-the-ankle footwear
The examiner will not begin the test if you are not properly dressed for safety.
Step 5: Complete Basic Control Skills
The first part of the test measures your ability to control the motorcycle in a controlled area. Basic control skills include:
- Starting and stopping smoothly
- Turning without losing control
- Maintaining balance
- Operating the clutch and throttle correctly
The examiner will watch how you handle the bike during each exercise.
Step 6: Complete On-Road Riding Evaluation (If Required)
For some test routes, you may be evaluated on real roadways where you must:
- Obey all traffic signs and signals
- Maintain safe spacing and lane position
- Make safe turns and lane changes
- React safely to traffic conditions
The examiner will observe your decision-making and riding habits in real traffic.
Step 7: Passing and Retesting
If you pass all portions of the motorcycle skills test:
- The examiner will notify you
- Your test results will be processed
- Your motorcycle endorsement or license will be issued
If you do not pass:
- You may retest after a waiting period
- Practice the skills you missed before scheduling again
Important Notes
- Arrive early on test day so you have time to complete vehicle inspection and check-in.
- If your motorcycle is not safe, you may be asked to reschedule your test.
- The examiner’s decision is based on your safe control and operation of the motorcycle.
