Registration, Titling & Inspection Fees

When you title, register, or inspect a vehicle in Maryland, you must pay certain fees. These fees help support vehicle services and road safety across the state.

This page explains what fees you may need to pay and when they apply.

How to Use This Page

  • Fees are grouped by service so they are easy to find.
  • Select a section to see the fees for that service.
  • Some fees may apply to more than one service.

Note: All fees are subject to Maryland law and may change.

Vehicle Titling Fees

(Accordion section)

You may need to pay titling fees if you:

  • Buy a vehicle
  • Move to Maryland and title your vehicle here
  • Request a duplicate or corrected title

Common titling fees include:

  • Certificate of Title fee
  • Lien recording fee (if applicable)
  • Duplicate title fee

A Certificate of Title proves who owns the vehicle.

Vehicle Registration Fees

(Accordion section)

Registration fees apply when you:

  • Register a vehicle for the first time
  • Renew your registration
  • Transfer license plates to another vehicle

Fees may vary based on:

  • Vehicle type
  • Vehicle weight
  • Length of registration (one year or two years)

Registration allows your vehicle to be legally driven on Maryland roads.

Safety Inspection Fees

(Accordion section)

Safety inspection fees apply when a vehicle must pass a Maryland Safety Inspection before titling or registration.

Important notes:

  • Inspection fees are set by the licensed inspection station
  • Re-inspection fees may apply if repairs are needed

A safety inspection checks that your vehicle meets Maryland safety standards.

Emissions Inspection Fees

(Accordion section)

If your vehicle requires an emissions inspection:

  • A standard emissions inspection fee applies
  • Fees are set by the emissions inspection program

Emissions inspections measure pollution levels from your vehicle.

Other Common Fees

(Accordion section)

You may also see fees for:

  • Duplicate registration cards
  • Duplicate license plates
  • Correcting information on records
  • Administrative penalties (if applicable)

Important Reminders

  • Some services require multiple fees (for example, titling and registration at the same time).
  • Not all vehicles require every service.
  • Certain vehicles may be exempt from specific fees.

Always review your total fees before completing your transaction.
