Titling a Vehicle Purchased from a Dealer

This page explains how to get a Maryland vehicle title when you buy a car from a dealer.

In most cases, the dealer submits the title application for you. If your dealer does not complete the titling process, or if you are told you must do it yourself, follow the steps below.

Step 1: Confirm Who Is Titling the Vehicle

Before taking action, check with your dealer.

  • Most licensed dealers send the title paperwork to the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) on your behalf.
  • If the dealer does not title the vehicle for you, you are responsible for completing the process.

If you are unsure, ask the dealer whether the Application for Certificate of Title has already been submitted.

Step 2: Choose How to Get Your Title

You can title a vehicle in one of the following ways.

Option 1: Title the Vehicle in Person

Visit a full-service MVA branch office.

  • This option allows staff to review your documents right away.
  • It may help avoid delays if paperwork is incomplete.

Call to action:
Schedule a titling appointment at an MVA branch office

Option 2: Title the Vehicle by Mail

Some customers may submit their documents by mail.

  • This option may take longer to process.
  • All required documents and fees must be included.

Call to action:
Download the title application and mailing instructions

Step 3: Gather the Required Documents

You must submit all required items to receive a Maryland title. These may include:

  • The completed Application for Certificate of Title
  • Proof of ownership from the dealer
  • Certificate of Origin
  • Original bill of sale, if applicable
  • Odometer disclosure statement
  • Valid identification
  • Any required lien information
  • Payment for all applicable fees and taxes

Do not alter official forms. Incomplete or incorrect paperwork may delay processing.

Fees

Titling fees vary based on vehicle type and transaction details.

  • Title fee
  • Excise tax, if applicable
  • Additional fees for liens or special circumstances

Current fees are listed on the related service pages.

What Happens After You Apply

Once your application is approved:

  • Your Maryland Certificate of Title will be mailed to you
  • Processing times vary
  • You can track the status of your title online

Call to action:
