Titling a Vehicle Bought From a Dealership

Welcome to the new MVA.Maryland.gov!

You’ve reached the new website for the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration. Thanks for visiting!

This page explains how to get a Maryland vehicle title when you buy a car from a dealer.

If you purchased your vehicle in Maryland, the dealer submits the title application for you

If you purchased your vehicle from an out-of-state dealer that does not complete the titling process on your behalf, follow the steps below.

Find out if your dealer is handling your title.

Before taking action, check with your dealer.

  • Most licensed dealers send the title paperwork to the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) on your behalf.
  • If the dealer does not title the vehicle for you, you are responsible for completing the process.

If you are unsure, ask the dealer whether the Application for Certificate of Title has already been submitted.
