Returning Maryland License Plates
You must return your Maryland license plates when you no longer need them. Returning plates helps protect you from insurance penalties, fines and future fees.
There is no appointment to return your plates! Simply stop by a location near you and drop in a 24-hour tag return box.
When to return license plates
You must return your license plates if you:
- Sell, trade or junk your vehicle
- Cancel your insurance coverage on your vehicle
- Move out of Maryland
- No longer use your vehicle
Keep your insurance active until you receive your tag return receipt. After you have confirmation that your plates have been cancelled, you may cancel your insurance.
How to return 1-4 sets of plates
If you are returning one to four sets of license plates, choose the method that is most convenient for you. Start by removing all plates from your vehicle, front and back.
Option 1: Dropoff at the MVA
- Place the plates in an envelope or secure bag.
- Fill out the Tag Return Form (VR-027) - PDF - 161.94 KB and place it in the envelope or bag with your plates. Copies of the form are also available at the 24-hour tag return box.
- Bring to the MVA and either:
- Deposit in the 24-hour tag return drop box.
- Visit the information counter to drop off and get a printed receipt right away.
Option 2: Mail your plates to the MVA
- Package the plates securely.
- Include the Tag Return Form (VR-027) - PDF - 161.94 KB and make sure your contact information is current to receive your receipt.
- Mail them to the MVA. Sending tags by certified mail with return receipt requested is recommended.
How to return 4+ sets of plates
If you are returning more than four sets of license plates, you may need in-person assistance, special handling, or additional documentation. Contact the MVA for more information.
What to expect after returning your plates
After the MVA receives your plates:
- Your license plate and registration record will be closed
- You can cancel your insurance. Insurance penalties will stop, if applicable.
Using myMVA, you can download your tag return receipt anywhere from your phone, tablet or computer. Keep proof of return (receipt or tracking number) for your records. Please allow 72 hours (business days) from the time of the drop before searching for your tag return receipt in our systems.

Yes. You must return any and all Maryland license plates when you no longer need them. Do not delay the return.
If your license plates have been lost or stolen, report the theft to your local law enforcement agency. Be sure to obtain a copy of the police report, or at least the police report number.
If your license plates are not recovered, you will need to order substitute license plates for your vehicle. These can be obtained by ordering on myMVA or making an appointment for vehicle services. Make sure to bring the police report to your appointment.
Please Note: If you receive substitute license plates to replace license plates that are lost or stolen, you are not entitled to a refund.
You may be eligible for a refund if your license plate expiration date is more than 12 months away. To receive a refund, complete the Registration Plate Refund Application (VR-021) - PDF - 85.13 KB and include it with the license plates you are returning.
Registration Return Refund Eligibility:
- 100% refund for unused plates with sticker NOT affixed to plate
- 50% refund for plates with MORE THAN one year remaining
- NO REFUND for:
- Plates with LESS THAN one year remaining
- Registration plates returned for cancellation with substitute plates and/or sticker issued
Your refund is prepared by the Maryland Comptroller’s Office in Annapolis. You should receive the refund within 6 weeks of returning the license plates. If you do not receive the refund in 6-8 weeks, contact the MVA for assistance.
