Returning Maryland License Plates

You must return your Maryland license plates when you no longer need them. Returning plates helps protect you from insurance penalties, fines and future fees.

There is no appointment to return your plates! Simply stop by a location near you and drop in a 24-hour tag return box.

When to return license plates

You must return your license plates if you:

  • Sell, trade or junk your vehicle
  • Cancel your insurance coverage on your vehicle
  • Move out of Maryland
  • No longer use your vehicle

Keep your insurance active until you receive your tag return receipt. After you have confirmation that your plates have been cancelled, you may cancel your insurance.
