Returning License Plates
You must return your Maryland license plates when you no longer need them. Returning plates helps protect you from insurance penalties, fines, and future fees.
This page explains how to return 1–4 license plates, and what to do if you are returning more than four plates.
When You Must Return License Plates
You must return your license plates if:
- You sell, trade, or junk your vehicle
- You cancel your vehicle insurance
- You move out of Maryland and do not transfer the plates
- Your vehicle is no longer in use
Do not keep plates after insurance is canceled.
